Who We Are

How We Came Together

We founded Vita Nova in 2015. Our original group trained at Northwestern University's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and shared a commitment to working with adults across life stages—students, professionals, and people navigating personal and cultural transitions.

From the beginning, our work has been rooted in depth and personal meaning. We make space for what hurts right now while being attuned to the deeper themes that often underlie it—fears, hopes, identity questions, and long-standing patterns in relationships. We are curious about people's lived experiences and narratives, and we look for sources of strength alongside places of pain. Our integrative approach brings together evidence-based and skills-based therapies with depth-oriented, trauma-informed, and relational traditions. Throughout, we are guided by each client's goals, values, and wisdom. We believe that people can heal and move forward.

Many of us are immigrants or come from families of immigrants, and we know what it means to hold multiple perspectives at once—to navigate between cultures, languages, and value systems. These experiences inform our culturally responsive practice, grounded in dialogue, mutual respect, and attention to power and context in the therapy room. We also recognize the impact of systemic oppression, racism, and inequality, and we strive to hold these realities with humility and intention.

What drew us together was more than professional training. Working as a collective allows us to learn from one another, stay engaged with developments in theory and practice, and support each other's growth. In this way, we aim to offer care that is ethical, thoughtful, and grounded in genuine human connection.

We offer therapy in Mandarin, Spanish, Italian, and English in Chicago, Evanston, and remotely.

Dante and Beatrice by Henry Holiday
Dante and Beatrice,
Henry Holiday, 1883

Why the Name Vita Nova

Italian poet Dante Alighieri wrote Vita Nova in 1294. A combination of prose and verse, the book narrates Dante's own experience of loss, in his case of a loved woman. The narrative details how an upsetting event was transformed by the Poet into an occasion for maturation and growth. The book opens with the Latin phrase Incipit Vita Nova: "thus begins a new life."

Vita Nova was founded on the 750th anniversary of Dante's birth, honoring this idea that difficult experiences can mark the beginning of something new.
