Stephanie Carrera, PhD, ABPP

I am a Latina psychologist who helps adults and young adults understand how thoughts, feelings, and actions shape their wellbeing. I offer an active and empowering space to navigate anxiety, low mood, family-of-origin concerns, identity exploration, and cultural transitions. I also provide psychotherapy for work and school-related struggles, including low motivation, attention difficulties, and time management concerns. Clients working with me strengthen their awareness of how their life experiences shape their patterns and build strategies to move through challenges effectively. I see clients at our Evanston and Chicago Loop offices and via telehealth.

Born and raised in an Ecuadorian American home, I am bilingual and bicultural. Clients can speak English, Spanish, Spanglish, or Ingleñol in their work with me. I also lived and studied for several years in England and Italy. These experiences, as well as my identity as a woman of color working in several professional settings, deepen my empathy for clients navigating various cultural messages and social pressures at home, work, and school. I am committed to weaving healing in psychotherapy with social justice advocacy alongside clients who have been silenced, disempowered, and oppressed.

Service and leadership are fundamental to my work as a Latina psychologist. I live out my intersecting professional identities through culturally attuned mentoring of psychology students of color at various career stages and through service leadership with the Society of Counseling Psychology and the American Psychological Foundation. I also served in multiple leadership roles for the National Latinx Psychological Association. These opportunities help me to give back to the professional and personal communities that have and continue to uplift me.

Office of Stephanie Carrera

"But experience has taught me that you cannot value dreams according to the odds of their coming true. Their real value is in stirring within us the will to aspire. That will, wherever it finally leads, does at least move you forward. And after a time you may recognize that the proper measure of success is not how much you've closed the distance to some far-off goal but the quality of what you've done today."

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, My Beloved World
