Free Genogram Maker

A genogram is a family tree that shows more than names and dates. It maps how people are connected: who is close, who is in conflict, who has drifted apart, and which patterns repeat from one generation to the next.

We use genograms in therapy to understand where a person comes from. You can use this one on your own, to think about your family and relationships, or bring it to a session to share with your therapist.

A sample genogram: three generations of a family, with close, distant, and conflicted relationships
Open the genogram maker Free, nothing to install. Works best on a computer or tablet.

How to start

  • Begin with yourself, then add parents, siblings, and grandparents.
  • Add partners, children, and anyone who feels like family, related by blood or not.
  • Draw the relationships: close, distant, conflicted, or cut off.
  • Notice what repeats across generations, such as roles, illnesses, migrations, or losses.

Your privacy

The genogram maker runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to us or stored on our servers, and nothing is saved until you choose to. When you're done, save it as a PDF to share or print, or as a file to open again later, with an optional password.

If working on your genogram brings up something you'd like to explore, our therapists in Chicago, Evanston, and online would be glad to help.
